*Agony and Glory: Westside2 Lose Last-Gasp Thriller by the Barest Margin*
On a cool and serene Easter Sunday, beneath calm skies that masked the storm of competition to come, a gripping encounter unfolded in the Manicaland Cricket League as Westside2 fell heartbreakingly short—just two runs shy—against Mutare Cricket Club in a match that will linger in memory for its drama and razor-thin margin.
After winning the toss, Captain Takunda Manyama elected to field, a decision that initially paid dividends as Westside2’s bowlers executed their plans with discipline and intent. Mutare Cricket Club began cautiously, building a steady opening partnership before Dumoluhle Dube broke the stand in the twelfth over with a moment of brilliance, his off-spin deceiving the batsman to leave the score at 29/1. Momentum briefly tilted as Tatenda Nota announced himself with pace and precision, clean bowling Silent Mujaji before striking again just three deliveries later to dismiss Maposa, leaving the batting side rattled.
Amid the falling wickets, Willard Chirenje stood firm, anchoring the innings with resilience and composure. His well-crafted half-century provided stability, though his resistance was cut short immediately after reaching the milestone, undone by a superb delivery from Paul Mhlanga that shattered his stumps. Captain Manyama led from the front with the ball, producing a clinical spell that included the prized wicket of Crosby, bowled for 5 with a delivery that struck the top of middle stump.
The youthful energy of Westside2 continued to shine as Michael Shungu showcased his promise, removing Kamwanda for a duck, while Paul Mhlanga returned to devastating effect—dismissing Prince Chimeri leg-before and bowling Panashe Gatsi in quick succession. Leon Zhakata added his name to the wickets column with an unplayable delivery that cleaned up Edward Mlambo, and Dube returned to wrap up the innings, bowling Henry Marume to seal a disciplined bowling effort. Mutare Cricket Club were bowled out for 170 in 47 overs—a competitive but chaseable total.
In reply, Westside2’s innings began on shaky ground, losing two early wickets within the first three overs. Perkins Maravanyika fell to a clever slower delivery from Silent Mujaji, and Ryan Neshiri followed soon after, bowled by Brendon Mujaji. With pressure mounting, Captain Manyama injected life into the chase with a spirited counterattack. His aggressive cameo of 43 off 32 balls, laced with four boundaries, shifted momentum and revived belief.
The Skipper's fourth wicket partnership with Mufaro Magwere added a crucial 61 runs before the captain was caught behind, departing for a 32-ball 43. Magwere's resistance was finally broken, trapped LBW by Henry Marume. The Opener departing for a laborious 20 runs, grinding 78 balls in the process. Leon Zhakata and Dumoluhle added 30 more runs on the scoreboard with brisk aggression before Leon was caught by Malvin Maphosa, a sensational catch at long-on.
With the score for Westside2 at 164/8, the young squad required 7 runs with two wickets in hand. It was growing nervy at the beautiful ground as both teams were within touching distance to glory. Michael Mashungu was caught and bowled by Silent Mujaji, taking a fifer in the process.
Westside2 168/9, at the beginning of the 40th over, the Caribbean boys required 2 runs to tie and 3 to win. Crosby bowled to Thomas Nhenga, in a fit of panic Tatenda Ndongwe attempted to steal a run but there was a fielder at Mid-on who effected a run out to the wicket keeper's end, Ndongwe run out, Mutare Cricket Club winning by 2 runs.
Westside2 losing by the smallest of margins, fine razor-thin margin loss for the young emerging squad.
A painful but well fought match that the boys can only learn from.
